Things to do in Giyani
Giyani is often called the place where the people dance — a warm Tsonga town on the Klein Letaba, with mopane country at the door and Kruger within a day trip. Mashamba Country House is your quiet base for all of it.
START HERE
A town with a new skyline.
Most guests arrive for work, family, a function or a stop on the way north. Stay a little longer and Giyani opens up: a mountain sign you can photograph from the road, a nature reserve a few kilometres out of town, a dam for a slow afternoon, markets, music and food that belongs only to this part of Limpopo.
NEAREST LANDMARK
The GIYANI mountain sign
On the rise overlooking the town entrance — around the Kremetart side — Greater Giyani Municipality has placed large Hollywood-style letters that simply read GIYANI. Construction on the welcome site began in 2025. The letters went up in 2026 and have quickly become the photo stop everyone asks for.
It is the closest “must-see” to Mashamba: easy to reach after check-in, best in late afternoon when the bushveld light hits the hillside, and a clean first memory of the town. Ask at reception for the current best viewpoint and a safe pull-off. The municipality has also planned a small viewing area as the site is completed, so the visit will only get better.
Tip: take the picture, then come back to Mashamba for tea. The sign is a landmark, not an all-day outing.
AROUND TOWN
Local experiences
Nature · ±6 km
Man’ombe Nature Reserve
Just east of town, Man’ombe sits against the hills that gave this area its name. Expect mopane woodland, picnic spots and a chance of kudu, giraffe, mountain zebra, impala, waterbuck and crocodile near the water. A local guide can talk you through Shangaan-Tsonga history as well as the animals. Pack water, go early, and keep the visit unhurried.
Water · picnic
Nsami Dam
Giyani’s weekend shoreline. Families come for fishing, a cooler-box lunch and that wide Lowveld sky. Birding is good in the quieter hours. Middle Letaba Dam is the sister stop if you want a longer scenic drive through villages and cattle country.
Culture
Thomo Village
Village tourism done the old way: beadwork and carving at community projects, a donkey-cart loop if it is running, indigenous plates such as muroho, tihove and xigugu, and Tsonga dance when groups are performing. Confirm on the day — this is living culture, not a timed theme park.
Town
Giyani CBD and markets
The town is busy, practical and full of colour. Walk the shops, pick up fruit, look for beadwork, pottery and wood carving, and listen for Xitsonga in every doorway. Giyani was laid out as an administrative centre in 1969; today it is still the heartbeat of Greater Giyani — 90-plus villages around one real town.
Easy outing
Giyani Golf Course
Even if you do not play, the course is known locally for zebra, giraffe and bushbuck moving between the fairways, plus serious birdlife. It is one of those Giyani surprises: a sporting ground that still feels like bushveld.
Heritage
Baobabs, Baleni and Sautini
East of town, the country opens toward Klein Letaba, old baobabs, Baleni Camp and the Sautini salt pans — a heritage landscape of hot springs, mopane forest and salt harvested in the traditional way. Best done with a local guide who knows the protocol at sacred sites.
TASTE & SOUND
Eat like Giyani. Dance like Giyani.
Ask for Tsonga food while you are here. Matomani (mopani worms), vuswa, tshopi, xigwimbi and vukanyi — marula beer in season — are the plates and drinks that tell you you have left the highway. In the evening, listen for xibelani, mchongolo, mpuluto and makhwaya. Giyani did not invent the phrase “the land of the friendly people” by accident. A greeting in Xitsonga goes a long way: Avuxeni in the morning, Nkhensa / Inkomu for thank you.
HOW TO SPEND THE DAYS
Weekend ideas from Mashamba
One easy day
Sign, reserve, dam, home
Morning photograph at the GIYANI mountain letters. Late morning at Man’ombe. Long lunch back at Mashamba or a picnic at Nsami Dam. Sunset on the property. This is the stay-in-Giyani day — no highway, no rush.
Culture day
Village and market
Start in the CBD for crafts and cash stops. Continue to Thomo if a visit has been arranged. Return through the villages in the afternoon light. Evening: a proper local meal and an early night. Perfect for couples and first-time visitors.
Family weekend
Water and wildlife
Saturday: mountain sign plus Nsami Dam picnic. Sunday: Man’ombe or a short drive toward the Klein Letaba for children who need space to look at water, birds and big trees. Keep drives short. Giyani heat rewards an afternoon rest at the country house.
Safari add-on
Kruger from Giyani
Sleep at Mashamba the night before. Leave early for Phalaborwa Gate (about 100–105 km) or aim north toward Punda Maria (around 85 km) if that is your Kruger plan. Shangoni has long been spoken of as the closer western idea for Giyani — check current access before you set the alarm. Back at Mashamba that night, the shower and the bed earn their keep.
FOR WORK TRIPS
Business travel, without the bland hotel.
Giyani is the seat of Greater Giyani and a working town for government, contractors, NGOs, mines-support and regional meetings. Mashamba is built for that guest: a quiet room, parking, WhatsApp-easy booking, and a location that still lets you see the new mountain sign and grab a decent meal after the last meeting. Bring the laptop. Leave time for one outdoor hour. The town will feel less like a stopover and more like a place you understand.

Times change with roadworks, cattle and rain. Treat these as planning figures, not promises. We are happy to sketch a route before you leave the yard.
Giyani is not a brochure town. It is a real Mopani capital with a new sign on the mountain, old trees on the flats, and people who will point you the right way if you ask. Stay at Mashamba, take the photograph, then go a little further than the main road.
